Mistakes in Setting Goals

Why do you think people tend to fail in achieving their goals? Even though how hard they tried. Even if they tried many ways and strategies to make it happen but it just keeps on failing. Their hard works were in vain. Too much time and efforts are already wasted. Whatever they do is just not enough.

It’s a failure.

Why is that?

Ask yourself. Why do I keep on failing? Think of a reason why you can’t do it.

Maybe there’s something wrong on your ways, strategies or tactics, whatever that is. Maybe you’re coming in too strong. Maybe you expect too much on yourself. Maybe you’re just not trying hard enough. Or maybe there’s something wrong in your goal.

Find out what is wrong in your goal. Ask yourself if:

Is it too many?

Most of us tend to hit two birds with one stone, but not everyone can do that. Just take it easy and focus yourself on one goal at a time. You don’t need to finish all your goals in just a day. That’s why we’re given another day to try. There’s always tomorrow. Let’s say, focus first on the short-term goals then after you finish it work on your long-term goals.

But the problem is we tend to do all at once because we think that it’s more convenient. Well, for some I think. But if you can’t handle it then don’t. As the old Chinese proverb says, “Man who chases two rabbits catches neither”. It’ll just ruin everything and result is- failure!

Is it too big?

We all want big goals to achieve. The bigger the better. Yep, that’s for sure. But can you do that? Before setting a bigger goals ask yourself if you can achieve it. Am I ready for this? Is this too big for me?

We’re human who craves for something more, something even better, and something bigger because we are never contented on what we have. We are always hungry, craving and wanting and it’s a good thing, what’s bad is asking for too much and we’re still human and that there are things that we can’t do in just a snap. It all takes time. Try the smaller ones but still aim for the big one. Hold on to it and wait for the right time.

Let’s say your goal is to publish a book. For me, it’s already a big goal. Try the small one, start a blog instead and if you’re lucky enough to be known then go for that big goal.

Is it written?

In order to achieve a goal, first write it all down. Unless it is written it is merely a dream and it’s just in your head and you’ll forget it, eventually. That’s because you don’t have a course of direction. Commit it into writing to clarify what are your goals and follow it. Make a “to do” list and put a check on every task you finished so that you’ll know what else are left undone.

We live every day and lots of things are needed to be done so it is much easy if we keep a list of task to remind us what we need to do.

Is it specific?

We make goal in general like as I’ve said “I want to publish a book”. But what kind of book and how are you planning to publish it? Be specific. It is hard to achieve a goal that is too broad.

Set a simplest goal that you can. It shouldn’t be unrealistic but still challenging. It will bore us if we achieve it too easy. It’s like as if we achieve nothing. Just have fun and enjoy while you are on your way to the finish line.
